Dr Maarten Pieterse

For many, he is a familiar face in Dutch veterinary medicine. He taught for almost 40 years at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, where he trained generations of students in the field of reproduction in farm animals. Maarten is known for his practical approach, years of experience with ultrasound in cattle and horses, and expertise in reproduction techniques such as ovum pick-up. Even after his retirement, he remains active in education, including through courses and training.

The trainings provided by Maarten Pieterse are entirely Dutch-speaking and will take place in Q4 of 2025 or Q1 of 2026. Depending on the number of participants, the duration of the training will be specified to ensure both theoretical and practical training.

Ultrasound training

A ½-day training covering the following topics: pregnancy diagnosis, cycle guidance, ovarian pathologies, foetal sex determination, embryonic mortality and twins. In addition, training will be provided by NIFA led by Linda van den Broek on the use and functions of the Easi-Scan:Go.

Dr Giovanni Gnemmi

This Italian cattle veterinarian works in Spain and is an internationally recognised specialist in cattle reproduction. Since the 1990s, Giovanni has been active worldwide as an expert in ultrasound examination and reproductive management. With his organisation Bovinevet Internacional, he provides training courses and lectures on reproductive management, uterine health, cycle guidance, pregnancy monitoring and doppler ultrasound. Giovanni combines scientific knowledge with practical experience and is known as a pioneer in the application of ultrasound in cattle management. He has written several books and publications, and is also a lecturer at the University of Valencia.

The trainings provided by Giovanni Gnemmi are entirely in English and will take place in Q1 or Q2 of 2026. Depending on the number of participants, it will be further determined whether the trainings will be entirely theoretical or also practical.

VET-LAB 1
A 2-day theoretical ultrasound training course covering the following topics: pregnancy diagnosis, cycle guidance, pathologies of the ovary and diagnosable disorders of vagina, cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes.

VET-LAB 2
A 2-day theoretical ultrasound training course covering the following topics: foetal sex determination, embryonic mortality, gestational pathologies, malformations, twins and non-pregnancy determination with CFM-doppler. (pre-, re-) synchronisation, and diagnosis of anovulation.

VET-LAB Lung
This 1-day course provides an introduction to lung ultrasound covering the following topics: anatomy of the lung on ultrasound image and specific core features, equipment needed, settings and procedure, pleural line analysis, A-lines and B-lines.

VET-LAB Extra-genital
A 1-day ultrasound training course covering the following topics: ultrasound diagnosis of teat disorders, calf umbilical region, left and right abdomen.
